From the Dolomites to the Georgia swamps

After studying clay materials, I formulated a clay body that is better structured to be more resilient after imposing failure. My choice to use earthenware clay body is for its association with blue-collar work. It was important to incorporate Georgia red clay into the clay body recipe. My first experience building with clay was with red Georgia clay as well as the pain and loss experienced with leaving my extended family in Italy to move to Georgia.

I have found myself building tools to apply elements of force. I built a constraining plexiglass container and placed portrait busts in water allowing them to deteriorate. The pieces use a conceptual approach to capture the expression of force removed from the artist’s hand and reassigned to external forces and events of life.

Above is example is the first successfully that fused back together after experiencing the damaging force of water. I like how the nose breaks and tips to a new angle. Has this Doug Jeck feel I’m enjoying.
